Stalking at Starbucks

There were not many people at Starbucks when I arrived. It was cold out side and the smell of freshly brewed, hot coffee was very inviting. Most of the students here are studying. I think they sense that we are up to something. It is really quite. One guy is on his computer, another is studying for a micro test, and the last is listening to his i-pod. There are two people working at the counter. The girl is brewing coffee, while the guy is checking out customers at the register.

The sun is coming in the windows. It is very bright and it is distracting those who are studying.
An older lady comes in and sits in the big comfy chairs next to a younger guy. I tried to figure out there relationship, but before I could hear they got up and moved. They must have sensed me. I did catch a little of their initial conversation. They were meeting for the first time. They asked each other questions like "where are you from?" I think the real reason they moved was because it was too loud over where we were.

Not much is going on. There is not much business. The staff is cleaning. About 20 minutes before the next class started. The place started to fill. Every chair and table was full and the line was getting pretty long. There were a lot of conversations going on. A group of girls were talking about getting married. Another guy was explaining to his friend that his computer was about the crash. All the while you here in the background, "what can I get you to drink?" "Would you like whip cream with that?" It is time to go and people are eager to take out seats.

  1. I like getting to read two versions of the same story. The dialogue you include in your description of the young guy and older lady helps me see them differently from the way I see them in Deidre's post. I wonder why two people of such different ages who didn't even know each other met at Starbucks at 8:30 on a Tuesday morning...

The sun coming in the windows and the background questions from the baristas help me see the scene you describe.
