We started the morning going to the universities library. We came to find out that the library is not a very interesting place if you are looking for gossip on the latest couple break-ups, celebrity gossip, new movies etc. One thing that we noticed is that there are some strange people in this place. There was a guy walking around the computers in a Dallas Cowboys hoodie, just watching people. We didn't know if he was the keeper of the computers or a stalker.
The only conversations that we heard within the entire library had to do with the librarian on the phone with someone interested in a book from or about Australia. Its hard trying to ease drop on a conversation when you can't hear the other half of the conversation. I could make up things that the person was asking; like maybe the librarian had a lover on the phone and was just covering it up by the certain book. It leaves your imagination to no certain ending.
The librarian talked at a very low whisper, "Hello, how can I help you?". The person on the phone asked for a book I guess. The librarian suggested a book, "Is there any edition you are looking for?". This conversation lasted for about five to ten minutes. No good gossip there.
There were also two men trying to work on the computer beside me. The man in flannel told the man in the dress coat, "I was trying to make it easier for us". They started laughing and walked off not fixing the computer simply taking down the out of order sign.
We also learned that the people in the printing station are not very friendly with the people they are suppose to be helping. There wasn't much that went on. The upstairs was quiet and the tutoring area, no one was found. We also noticed computer screens of different people one person was looking at research on plants and rocks and the other people were "humping" facebook. All in all there was not much fun activities in the Ole' library of the University of Arkansas!

You do a nice job with specific detail here, Brooke. The way you pack specifics into sentences makes me want to keep reading. A few examples: "gossip on the latest couple break-ups, celebrity gossip, new movies," and "research on plants and rocks and the other people were 'humping' facebook." I like your attention to the distinctive elements of people's clothes. The Cowboys hoodie, flannel, and dress coat fix the people in this sketch in your reader's mind; as a result, you could rely on your reader to remember them if you developed the piece into a longer one. I also like that you checked out the library from different angles: the staff, the computer screens, different floors and so on. You scoped out a lot in a limited amount of time!
ReplyDeleteI like that your frustration with the lack of interesting subjects and conversations comes through your writing, without you having to come right out and say it.
ReplyDeleteYour descriptions make it easy to picture myself in your shoes in the library.
